Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Question: If I make a donation, how will my money be spent?
Answer: Donations will go directly to help with land acquisition, site development and construction of the estimated 511 units of affordable housing.
Question: Why focus on the chronically homeless?
Answer: People who are chronically homeless use more emergency shelter and emergency services because they go so long without a stable place to live. Providing safe, affordable housing for these people will increase the quality of life for everyone in the community and save us (the taxpayers) millions of dollars in the long run.
Question: Where will the new housing be located?
Answer: Since there is a need for new affordable housing in all neighborhoods, the sites will be distributed throughout the community. The number of formerly homeless people living in any one location will always be less than 50% of the total units. This is called the mixed income model. The housing will also be located with good access to public transportation, shopping and all goods and services that are necessary to maintain a high quality of life.
Question: Will the new housing look like the rest of my neighborhood?
Answer: Yes. The development team for Building Tulsa, Building Lives carefully studies the neighborhood plans and selects architectural designs that blend into and facilitate the design styles desired by the community. Working closely with the Mayor's office, city planners and neighborhood associations ensures that the final design for a site meets everyone's needs.
Question: Who is eligible to live in the housing?
Answer: A percentage of the units at each site will be dedicated to persons who are formerly homeless and/or have a disabling condition. The remainder of the units will be available at the prevailing market rate to anyone who is interested in safe, secure, affordable housing. This is called the mixed income model for community integration.
