Our vision: Tulsa's new approach to homelessness

A bowl of soup and a blanket may meet an immediate need, but does nothing to break the cycle of homelessness.

Today, Tulsa has the tools, resources and expertise to solve the problem that most American cities only hope to manage. A strategic initiative group has produced an achievable plan that can be funded and implemented in a relatively short period of time.

This group represents a collaboration and cooperation of government, private and public services, foundations, faith-based organizations and neighborhoods. Its goal is to provide a unified approach to property management and service delivery.

“Building Tulsa, Building Lives” is designed to increase access to affordable housing and to help bring an end to chronic homelessness in Tulsa within five years. The city will utilize new and rehabilitated housing as well as scattered, mixed-income apartment models that meet basic housing needs to put roofs over people’s heads. And by creating a supportive living environment around that housing, this community can help individuals and families who have experienced homelessness focus on what they need to do to reclaim their lives and succeed.
