Economic Impact
Creating Goodwill. Generating Revenue.
Eliminating homelessness in Tulsa will have huge social and humanitarian implications. Construction will create new affordable housing accross our community. When people are in stable housing they become employable, productive, taxpaying citizens again, purchasing goods and services in the communities where they live.
Estimated construction costs*
- 611 units
- $31,505 per unit cost
- $7,000 reserve
- $23.7 million direct benefit
- $41.3 million direct and indirect benefit
- 260 full-time construction workers
- $7.7 million direct income
- $14.4 million to Tulsa economy
- $460,000 one year sales tax impact on construction
- $235,000 one year property tax impact
Development of this magnitude would attract other businesses to the downtown area – part of the chain reaction of a positive business climate.
Note that the biggest cost variances are in medical hospitalization, inpatient psychiatric care and social services. Without supportive housing, the costs associated with hospitalization and psychiatric care would remain constant. However, with supportive housing, social service costs would diminish as individuals become more self-sufficient.
Now, consider the intangible costs of taking no action. How much revenue never will be generated? What projects will never be developed? What companies never will relocate to Tulsa? The need for an affordable solution to chronic homelessness has never been more urgent.
